The long awaited return to the MMA scene by former CFC champion Shane Nix is happening on Friday 14 May 2010 in the ‘Immortality Battle Of The Gods’ at Sydney Olympic Sports Centre.
Shane’s last fight was back in November 2008 against Brian Ebersole and the fight ended by TKO due to an old injury Shane had had for a while.
XF spoke to Shane a few days before his return and he tells us about the recovery process and how hungry he is to once again rise to the top of his sport and claim back that belt.
XF “Thanks for the time to speak with me Shane and I won’t take up to much of your time since you’re in the middle of cutting weight and we know how much fun that can be! Let’s start with your loss in the Ebersole fight and the injury that sidelined you for so long.”
SN “The fight was going OK and I was on top and then Brian, in an effort to get up and go for a takedown, put me in an awkward position on my knee with the recurring injury. Then my knee popped. This happened because I had previously torn the tendons on both knees and the bone had recalcified a bit higher leaving a sloppy joint. Not being able to continue to fight I verbally submitted. After the fight I had no choice and decided to seek medical advice to have this problem fixed once and for all. This loss was the only blemish on my record. It’s been a long time recovering but they have healed 100% and I’m looking forward to seeing Ebersole again. “
XF “We will all be looking forward to that rematch.”
“Shane, you’re fighting Adriano Magnani from Gracie Barra Sydney, what do you know about him? “
SN “Adriano has very good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and has an 8-2 record, although it doesn’t say this on his Sherdog record because they have not added in all the Australian fights. He has respectable stand-up but his wrestling is not up to my standard. His Jiu Jitsu on his back is very good but my top game is more than enough to nullify his bottom game. I am too strong, too athletic for him and I plan on knocking him out.”
XF “After such a long hiatus you must be itching to get back in there and do what you do best.”
SN “Yeah you could say that! It’s been a long time and I’m cutting weight at the moment so this is the worst part but the reward will come tomorrow night. I want a hard fight and I hope it’s a war. I want a war.”
XF “After tomorrow night what are the plans for the next few months? “
SN “Straight after the fight I’m going home to get some sleep! Then I will be back in the gym Saturday morning doing a sparring session. I have another fight booked in for 5 weeks time in Queensland. After that I wouldn’t mind fighting in CFC again. I’d like to get that belt back, it’s not a bad credential to have! After that I’m looking at heading to a Thailand training camp and suss out what’s abroad. There are some big show’s coming to Australia like ‘Impact’, where Brian Ebersole will be fighting Carlos Newton. If I can string together a few impressive wins and get on one of these shows that would be great or I can go abroad and start off as a little fish in a big pond and have a crack”
XF “Good luck, and thanks for your time”
